During the past summer many Harvard graduates and undergraduates have shown up well in various tennis tournaments, having won six championships and several qualifying rounds.
In the all England championship tournament at Wimbledon, England, B. C. Wright, ex '03, and H. H. Behr defeated Gore and Barrett 8-10, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, and the Lowe brothers 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4, but lost in the finals to A. F. Wilding and N. E. Brooks 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
In the international tournament for the Davis Cup B. C. Wright, ex.'03, lost to N. E. Brooks 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, but he defeated A. F. Wilding 6-4, 8-6, 7-5. In the doubles Wright and Behr defeated Brooks and Wilding 3-6, 12-10, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
In the Massachusetts championships at Longwood several Harvard men won matches. D. L. Pickman '07 defeated O. R. Leonard '08, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, R. D. Little defeated N. W. Niles '09 in the third round 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. In the same round F. J. Sulloway '05 lost to Leroy 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, G. P. Gardner '10 lost to W. J. Clothier '04, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4, R. S. Lovering '08 lost to C. R. Neal 6-2, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, and A. S. Dabney '09 lost to R. H. Palmer 6-0, 2-6, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. In the doubles , at Longwood A. S. Dabney '09 and R. S. Lovering '08 were defeated in the finals by Grant and Westfall 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
Besides these several smaller tournaments were won by Harvard men. F. J. Sulloway '05 defeated R. Bishop '01, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, in a match between Wellesley and the B. A. A. N. W. Niles '09 won three matches at Orange, New Jersey, but lost in the semi-final round to R. D. Little, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Niles was also defeated by Foulkes in the final round of the Canadian championships at Niagara, by the score of 6-2, 2-6, 2-6, 8-6, 6-4. C. C. Pell '08 was defeated in semi-finals at Orange, by S. P. Larned 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
H. Ward '00 and R. D. Little defeated W. J. Clothier '04 and W. A. Larned in the Seabright doubles, 6-4, 6-4. N. W. Niles '09 lost to Irving Wright in finals at Englewood, New Jersey, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Niles won the doubles tournament at Orange playing with Mrs. George L. Chapman 6-4, 6-4. H. Tallant '91 won at Far Rockaway defeating Touchard 10-8, 6-1, 6-3. R. B. Gring '06 and R. Haydock '10 won the doubles tournament at Ekwanok Club, Manchester, Vermont, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. R. D. Brown '90, won the singles at Ekwanok defeating F. Cushman 6-2, 6-2. A. Fraser-Campbell won the singles tournament at Cornish, Vermont, defeating Saint-Gaudens 10-8, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. Niles won the Nahant tournament defeating Colston 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
