UNIVERSITY AND 1910 ROWING

Tappan Tried at Stroke and Swaim at 3 in First Boat. Crews Will Race Today.

The first three University crews and the first Freshman crews will race downstream this afternoon at 3 o'clock over the regular two-mile course from the Longwood bridge to the Union Boat Club.

The work of the University rowing quad this week has been marked by a accession of changes in the orders, the just of which came yesterday afternoon, when Tappan was put in at stroke in the University crew and Swaim displaced Faulkner at 3 the latter going to that position in the second boat. Coach Wray has been making these numerous changes during the week in order to develop a good stroke, and the work of yesterday, with Tappan in that position, was very satisfactory. There is also difficulty in getting three how men who will row together well. Burchard, Lunt, and Faulkner, who have been tried at these positions have been rowing short and are uneven in their swing. Faulkner, especially has been short and yesterday Swaim showed some improvement over his work.

The second crew have shown improvement over their previous rowing, but the changes in the University crew have considerably broken up the orders. Yesterday, Morgan was moved from 4 to 2, and Mulligan went up from the third crew into his place, Fahnestock going to 4 in the third crew. Both crews rowed downstream half way between Harvard bridge and the Union Boat Club yesterday afternoon, in long stretches, and the long, even stroke of the University crew was well maintained until the stroke was raised.

Freshman Rowing Encouraging.

The orders of the Freshman crews have been kept the same throughout the week, with the exception of Waid, who was moved to 3 in the first crew from 6 in the second. The work yesterday was very encouraging at times, although the men were slow at the catch. It consisted mainly of short stretches and racing starts between the first and second crews. Myers, who has been doing well at stroke, has been sick for the past few days, but is expected back soon, when he will probably be put in at stroke in the first crew.
