Dartmouth will play the University baseball team on the regular diamond at Soldiers Field this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Reserved seats, at 75 cents, may be obtained at Leavitt & Peirce's, and at the box office on the field before the game. General admission tickets will be sold at 50 cents each.
Hartford has been chosen to pitch for Harvard and Captain Skillen will be in the box for Dartmouth. The University team will be without the services of Leonard, who is still nursing the tendon which he strained in the Army game. The injury proved more serious than was at first supposed, and trainer Donovan does not wish to take any chances with it. In Leonard's absence, Pritchett will be at third. Briggs will be back again at first base.
With Leonard on the bench, the outcome of today's game is by no means assured. Since the southern trip, the University team has been coming along nicely and there has been a general improvement in the work. There is lots of life in the team, and the men are beginning to play with a little more confidence. The hitting has been exceptionally good, no less than five of the players having percentages close to 300 or over; and on the bases the men are doing better. Currier's catching is as energetic and effective as formerly and his throwing is excellent. Briggs fits in splendidly at first and fields his position well, and McCall and Simons around second base are covering even more ground than last year. The outfield, with Captain Dexter, Harvey, and Pounds, is fielding well, but Pounds is not playing as well as last year yet, and uses poor judgment with his throws and while running bases. In the first Annapolis game, Hartford's work was very promising, and it appears as though he is recovering from the nervousness which made him ineffective for University baseball last year.
Dartmouth's team, on the other hand, has made the most consistent showing of any of the college teams this spring, and is generally considered to be the strongest aggregation of ball players that has ever represented the Hanover college. They have seven victories to their credit, including games from the University of Virginia 4-3, Annapolis 8-2, Georgetown 4-3, Tufts 9-4, and one defeat at the hands of Andover yesterday, 5-4. In Captain Skillen they have an expert pitcher, who has been invariably effective against his opponents. Last year, when Dartmouth won from Harvard, 3-1, he allowed only five scattered hits, and was invincible when hits meant runs. His team is well balanced and shifty and contains two exceptional infielders in Richardson and Schildmiller.
