The University basketball team was defeated by Columbia last Saturday evening in the Gymnasium by the score of 19 to 10. Although the University team put up a very good game, they were out-classed by Columbia, so that the final result of the game was never in doubt. The Columbia defense was unusually strong, and as a result the University forwards had very few opportunities to shoot.
The play during the first half was fairly close, due mainly to Cuthell's inability to take advantage of Harvard's fouls. In about the middle of this period Currie shot the University team's only goal from the floor on a difficult shot from the corner. Cuthell by very fast work made two baskets from the floor in this half, and when time was called the score was 9 to 5 in favor of Columbia.
In the second half the University team made many fouls, most of which were taken advantage of by Hurley of Columbia. Amberg kept the score from being more one-sided by his accurate throwing of fouls, missing only three of his 11 chances.
This victory causes a tie between Yale and Columbia for first place in the Intercollegiate League, each team having won and lost one game.
The summary: Score--Columbia, 19; Harvard, 10. Goals from floor--Cuthell 2, Hurley 2, Armstrong, Currie. Goals on fouls--Amberg 8, Hurley 7, Cuthell 2. Fouls called--on Harvard, 16; on Columbia, 11. Referee--W. N. Knox. Timekeepers--C. Almy, Jr., '08 and H. Fisher, Columbia. Time--20-minute halves.
