To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
The Football Song Committee announces that 42 songs were submitted and that two have been selected for trial. The number of songs submitted this year is much larger than hitherto and the number chosen for trial smaller than in the past.
This is the third year that the song competitions have been held on the nom de plume system and the fourth year since the competitions have been open to all men in the University. At least six songs have been selected for first trial by the Committees of former years. At the second mass meetings the number was reduced on a survival of the fittest basis. At the final mass meetings the two best songs were practiced and both used at the Yale game. The song most successfully used at the Yale game won the competition.
The present Committee's intended departure from a time honored custom is made without explanation. The men of the University are the ultimate judges of the best songs. But when two of 42 songs are tried, there is small opportunity for comparison and trial. A song has been known to be very successfully used when the Committee thought it the least likely to succeed of those selected for trial.
The CRIMSON has emphasized the necessity of new songs. It is not encouraging for the selection of the best song to try but two out of 42. Let us have at least six tried by the plan which has been so satisfactory in former years. 2G.
