Communication

[We invite all men in the University to submit communications on subjects of timely interest.]

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

An idea has recently been suggested to me, which, if properly carried out, would seem to add a much needed stimulus to one side of the game of football. One of the greatest criticisms that is heard at the present time against the game is that it is too rough and of no use to us after we leave college. Both of these facts are, of course, falsehoods, but that does not in any way diminish the harm they do in the popular mind.

Why not introduce into the schedule of the Harvard football team an annual game with the graduates to be played in the middle of October? By doing this we should not only be giving the University players a hard game against a team of considerable strength and great experience, but we should introduce a spirit of "friendliness" into the game.

It seems quite possible to get enough men to come back here for a week's practice and general reunion. And a week's practice would surely be sufficient in which to train a team that would give any ordinary university team a very hard game, if not actually defeat them. There are, of course, many obstacles in the way of this scheme at first, but these could be overcome, and once the game became an annual feature, football in general, and out University team in particular, would be greatly benefited. C. G. OSBORNE '07.
