About 246 men reported yesterday for the first practice of the University and Freshman track teams. Of these, 210 reported at the Gymnasium as candidates for the track events, and 36 reported at the Cage for the field events. At the Gymnasium, after light preliminary exercises, the sprinters practiced starts and ran three laps on the 130-yard board track on Holmes Field and the middle distance men ran ten laps. The distance men in the 3.30 o'clock squad took a slow road run. The baseball cage proved to be an excellent place for the field event practice, as there was plenty of room and the coach was able to watch more than one event at a time. A pit of soft earth is being prepared for the jumps and pole vault.
As the afternoon hours are usually crowded, as many men as possible should report in the morning in order to receive more individual instruction from the coaches. The four hours for squads are as follows: 11 and 12 o'clock in the morning, and 3.30 and 4.30 o'clock in the afternoon. Regular daily attendance is urged by the coaches.
