Second 1909 Crew Defeated

In a close race, over the mile and a half course, from below the Longwood bridge to the Union Boat Club, on the Charles River on Saturday afternoon, the Springfield High School crew defeated the Freshman second crew by a third of a length in the fast time of 7 minutes, 30 seconds.

Throughout the race, there was no open water between the boats. The Springfield crew took the lead at the start and after half a mile was half a length in the lead. Both crews were rowing about 32 strokes to the minute, but the Springfield crew showed more life and increased its lead to three-quarters of a length when the mile was reached. The Freshmen then spurted, but could only cut down Springfield's lead to a third of a length at the finish.

The orders of the crews were as follows:

Second Freshman--Stroke, Kemp; 7, Wood; 6, Wentworth; 5, Kennard; 4, Crowell; 3, Hanfstaengl; 2, Williams; bow, E. Cutler; cox., Gallatti.

Springfield--Stroke, Rising; 7, Highton; 6, Handforth; 5, Chisholm; 4, Buxton; 3, Bowers; 2, Lombard; bow, Ellis; cox., Lincoln.
