Last week witnessed hard work and important contests for all the athletic organizations. The baseball team particularly had three hard games, winning two out of the three played. In the first of these games the team defeated the strong Syracuse nine by a score of 5 to 0; Meyer, the Yale pitcher, allowing but two hits during the entire game. On Wednesday the University nine was defeated by Brown by the score of 1 to 0, although no errors were credited to the Yale team. Saturday the third game of the week was played at Holy Cross, Yale winning 10 to 9 in a close and exciting game.
Work for the majority of class and Freshman crews reached a climax on Saturday in the Annual Spring Regatta. Twenty crews took part in the events, the class championship being won by the first sophomore crew. In the race between the Yale and Columbia freshman crews the latter were defeated by two lengths, the official time being 4 minutes, 43 seconds for the 7-8 mile course. The University crew gave an exhibition row, but no time was taken.
The Yale track team defeated the Princeton team in a qual meet Saturday by the score of 78 3-4 to 25 1-4 points. Although no intercollegiate records were broken, the performances of Armstrong, the Princeton captain, in the hurdles, Gilbert of Yale in the pole vault, and Sheffield and Marshall in the broad and high jumps were very creditable. In the 120-yard high hurdles Armstrong equalled the time, 15 3-5 seconds, made last year in the Intercollegiate meet.
The annual election of officers for the Yale Glee, Banjo and Mandolin Clubs on last Wednesday resulted as follows: president, W. L. Carter '07; vice president, G. C. Tuttle '07; secretary, G. Truesdale '07; assistant secretary, H. Stanley '08.
