At the final trials for the Boylston Prizes for elocution held in Sanders Theatre last evening the first two prizes were awarded to J. A. Harley '06 and J. W. Twombly '06, and the second prizes to G. J. Hirsch '07, A. Davis '07 and F. W. Newcomb '07.
On the whole the declamations were characterized by a clear and accurate delivery, and in many cases showed signs of careful training. The speeches, although longer than need be, were interesting and varied, and were well received by the large audience present.
The selections of the prize winners were as follows: J. A. Harly '06, "The Roll-Call in the Philippine Question", Hoar; J. W. Twombly '06, "Vindication from Treason", Meagher; G. J. Hirsch '07, "Chant Pagan", Kipling; A. Davis '07, "Jugurtha, incarceratus vitam ingemit relictam", Wolfe; F. W. Newcomb '07, "Cruelty in the Philippines", Hoar.
The judges were Dean E. H. Wells '97, Professor W. B. Munro '99, Rt. Rev. T. A. Jaggar, Professor R. T. Fisher '98, Hon. M. Williams '68, Rev. G. A. Gordon '81, Mr. F. Winsor '93, Professor F. N. Robinson '91. Mr. M. Williams, chairman of the committee of judges, announced the successful contestants, and J. M. Montgomery '06 introduced the speakers.
