Yale Letter

Contrary to usual custom there will be practically no cage work for the baseball team this year. On this account practice began over a month later than usual, and as yet no general call for candidates has been made. Only members of last year's team and freshmen with experience have been called out. The squad at present consists of the following men: Chapin, Erwin, Jackson, Pratt, Bell, Camp, Church, O'Brien, Kinney, Huiscamp and Smith of last year's squad, and Williams, Taylor, Mallory, Madden, Beggs, Whittaker and Brooks of the freshman class.

The debating team and alternates to represent Yale in the debate with Harvard, to be held in Woolsey Hall on March 30, has been chosen as follows: L. O. Bergh '06, J. N. Pierce '06, E. H. Hart '07, R. R. Lockwood '07, R. B. Hull '07, and H. D. Smith '08.

A series of Sunday afternoon mass meetings is being arranged by the federation of Local Organizations, at which addresses will be given by men of national reputation on subjects relating to "The following Yale organizations have been asked to join the movement: Yale City Government Club, Yale Law School Political Club, Yale Hall, and Yale Union.

On Wednesday, March 7, Mr. Heinrich Conried's Irving Place Theatre Company presented Ludwig Fulda's drama, "Maskerade"' under the auspices of the Yale German Club.

A fund of $150,000 for the endowment of a chair of Applied Forestry and Practical Lumbering has been presented to the Yale Forestry School by the National Lumber Dealers' Association. The course will furnish instruction in log scaling and timber estimating and in practical work of bridge and dam construction.

The committee appointed by the University Council last fall to inquire into the conduct of athletics in Yale University, reported that in its judgment the principle of student management is a good one. The committee has investigated many evils connected with extravagant use of time and money and has suggested a number of important reforms.

The Faculty adopted a set of resolutions accepting the report of the committee, leaving the general management of athletics to the student body, but retaining to itself the right to intervene, "In regard to all points which fall directly under our jurisdiction, especially concerning the morals, the discipline or scholarship of the students.
