BASKETBALL WITH YALE

In Gymnasium at 8.--Harvard and Yale Tied in Intercollegiate Series.

The University basketball team will play the first of its two annual games with Yale this evening at 8 o'clock in the Gymnasium. Tickets at 50 cents for the floor and 75 cents for the gallery are on sale at Leavitt & Peirce's and at Brine's.

In the six games which the University team has played thus far this season five have been won by decisive scores. The first game was with Pennsylvania and was lost by the narrow margin of 13 to 9. Since then Cornell has been defeated 26 to 10, Boston College 42 to 6, Princeton 36 to 8, Tufts 28 to 10, and Holy Cross 25 to 10. Both Harvard and Yale have played three games in the intercollegiate series and have the same standing, both having defeated Cornell and Princeton and lost to Pennsylvania. During the Christmas recess the Yale team took its usual southern and western trip going as far as Galveston. Twelve games were played with Y. M. C. A. and club teams and Yale was victorious in seven.

Since its defeat by Pennsylvania the progress of the University team has been commendable. More team play has been developed than in recent Harvard teams, and especially in the later games the play has been very fast. In individual players the team is not unusually strong, but the way in which the men play together makes up for any lack of brilliant shooting. The guards are the most reliable part of the Harvard team and besides covering their own men very closely they are able to help the forwards on the defensive. Captain Griffiths, besides being a strong guard is a very good shot and a very brilliant individual player. At centre Amberg is of great assistance to the team, as his height enables him to touch the ball first on the toss-up. The forwards are weak on shooting, although Brown covers his man well. Quigley is inclined to play individually and leaves his man for some one else to cover.

Harvard has the advantage of experience and although even with Yale in intercollegiate standing should be able to outplay its opponents tonight.

The line-up follows: HARVARD.  YALE. Quigley, l.f.  r.g., Barrows Brown, r.f.  l.g., Noyes Amberg, c.  c., Fargo Burnham, l.g.  r.f., Anderson Griffiths, r.g.  l.f., Murphy
