Yale Letter

On Wednesday Morning, the University received the Imperial Chinese Commission which has been inspecting the American Universities. 'The commissioners were escorted by President Hadley and members of the Faculty. During his speech of Welcome, the President announced that two scholarships had been Permanently established for Chinese students, and that ten more would be offered for four years.

There have been an unusual number of interesting lectures during the last week. On Monday Evening Mr. J. B. Reynolds '84 Spoke on "The New China and its Relations with America." Edwin Emerson, the famous war correspondent, described the Russo-Japanese. War Thursday night. The Lyman Beecher Lectures on. "Preaching" were given by the Rev. Charles Brown at the Divinity School.

On February 14, the Athletic Committee met and chose Mr. Walter Camp as chairman and E. White '06 as secretary. Committees were appointed to consider training tables, finance, trophies, and elections of managers.

The university swimming team decisively defeated Brown in a meet held at Providence Tuesday evening. Yale representatives won every event on the program. In basketball, Yale won from Cornell 31 to 7, but was defeated by Columbia by the score of 26 to 14. On Friday night, a very successful dual gymnastic exhibition with Harvard was held at the Gymnasium.

With Tuesday's issue of the News the 1907 board took charge. The officers for the ensuing year will be, M. S. Little, chairman; A. W. Sawyer, business manager; E. B. Chapin, assignment editor.

Preparations for the forthcoming plays of the Dramatic Association, the German Club, and the Japanese students of the university were begun last week.
