NO SCRIMMAGE YESTERDAY

Practice in Forestalling New Plays. Punting for Ends and Backs.

The secret football practice yesterday afternoon was again very light, there being no scrimmage. The entire University squad was out, with the exception of Kersburg, who was given a day's rest on account of a cold. In the preliminary work Coach Reid and Burr punted to the backs for about 15 minutes in order to give them confidence while playing in the backfield, and practice in blocking off tacklers. All the ends ran down the field in turn under the punts. The catching was very satisfactory and much improvement was shown in the interference given the runner. Parker and Wendell tried several goals from the field. Hall and Kennard made a few attempts for goals from drop kicks from behind the line of scrimmage.

The most important feature of the work was a half-hour's line-up between the first and second teams in which most of the time was devoted to work on the forward pass and the onside kick. The second eleven retained possession of the ball all the time in order to give the first team experience in preventing the successful use of these new plays by opponents. Captain Foster ran through signals for a few minutes and was then replaced by Gilder. The first squad was given considerable practice in starting. Miller dislocated his shoulder in the same manner is in the West Point game--an injury which will prevent his playing again for the rest of the season.

The line-up follows: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Macdonald, l.e.  r.e., Kelley Osborne, l.t.  r.t., Philippbar Burr, l.g.  r.g., Plumb Parker, c.  c., Dore Gilmore, r.g.  l.g., O'Hare Peirce, r.t.  l.t., Comstock Starr, r.e.  l.e., Moore Newhall, q.b.  q.b., Cate Foster, Gilder, l.h.  r.h., White Lockwood, r.h.  l.h., Grosvenor Wendell, f.b.  f.b., Somes
