LONG SCRIMMAGE YESTERDAY

Two Fast 20-Minute Halves.--Second Team Scored by a 95-Yard Run.

Yesterday afternoon the University football team played two 20-minute halves against the second eleven, scoring four touchdowns to one made by the second team. The play was as good and as lively as any yet shown, this being in part due to the cool weather. In quickness in following the ball and in skill in the use of the forward pass and the onside kick the men on the first team showed a marked improvement. Lincoln and Wendell made very long gains on line plays, and Macdonald and Osborne recovered the ball for the first eleven several times on long punts, thus carrying the ball into striking distance. Macdonald, who has been laid up with an injured knee for some time, seems to fill his position at end excellently and follows the ball particularly well. The features of the scrimmage were the long runs made by Lincoln and by Bird, who made the only touchdown for the second eleven by running the length of the field after recovering a fumbled punt on his 15-yard line. Newhall and Hall, who replaced him at quarterback on the first team, ran the team with good judgment.

The preliminary work was very short, consisting of a 15-minute signal practice for the University team, and a short trial of forward passes. Burr and Foster gave the half backs practice in catching punts, while the linemen tried passing the ball on the run. Orr, who injured his foot slightly in Monday's practice, will probably be in condition in a few days. Burr kicked all four goals from touchdowns for the University team, and Adams kicked the one for the second eleven.

Taylor secured the ball on Burr's kick-off on his five-yard line and punted back to Newhall on the 45-yard line. After the second team had secured the ball on a forward pass, Taylor punted, Newhall downing the ball on the 55-yard line. Foster made five yards and Kennard added 15 more on a forward pass; then, after a penalty for holding, the first eleven lost the ball on a pass, regaining it in a few plays on Taylor's punt. With the ball on the 40-yard line Burr returned the punt, Macdonald recovering the ball on a fumble on the 27-yard line. Foster, Lincoln, and Wendell each made short gains, after which Wendell made the first touchdown on a 15-yard rush through centre. Wendell secured the second touchdown just before time was called for the first half, after Foster had carried the ball over the line once before, losing the points, however, on account of a penalty for holding.

In the second half after a few minutes of play, Bird secured the ball for the second team on a fumbled punt on his 15-yard line, and ran to the opponent's goalline for a touchdown. Wendell was enabled to make a third touchdown for the University team after three plays, for on the kick-off Osborne ran the ball back to the 25-yard line, after which Foster made 15-yards on a forward pass. Wendell made the fourth and last touchdown after his team had carried the ball to the one-yard line by the advantageous use of open plays.
