Statistics of Bumping Races

The following statistics have been prepared, which show the comparative standing of the different dormitory crews in each division at the end of the races last Saturday. The system of assigning the starting positions by lot gave some crews more opportunities to score bumps than others. The strength of the crews, however, has been ascertained fairly accurately. First Holyoke was declared the winner of division II, and Hollis Stoughton the winner of division III.

Division I: Claverly, the winner of the Filley Cups, maintained its position at the head of the river throughout the series; Craigie-Waverly held its position twice and was bumped once; Dunster-Dana-Drayton made no bumps and held its position twice (withdrew from the first race); Mt. Auburn street was bumped twice (withdrew from the third race); Randolph made one bump, held its position twice and was not bumped; Russell made one bump; held its position twice and was not bumped: Westmorly made no bumps, held its position three times and was not bumped.

Division II: Hampden made no bumps, held its position twice and was bumped once; First Holyoke made one bump, held its position twice and was not bumped; Holworthy made two bumps, held its position once and was not bumped; Matthews made no bumps, held its position twice and was bumped once; Perkins made no bumps, held its position three times and was not bumped; Thayer made no bumps, held its position once and was bumped twice; Weld made one bump, held its position twice and was not bumped.

Division III: Brentford made no bumps, held its position once and was bumped twice; College House made two bumps, held its position once and was not bumped; Foxcroft-Divinity was bumped twice, held its position once, and made no bump; Grays made one bump and held its position once (withdrew from the first race); Hollis-Stoughton made one bump, held its position twice and was not bumped; Second Holyoke maintained its position once (withdrew from the first and third races).

The order of the crews in each division at the end of the final race was as follows:

Division I: 1, Claverly; 2, Randolph; 3, Westmorly; 4, Russell; 5, Craigie-Waverley; 6, Dunster-Dana-Drayton; 7, Mt. Auburn street.

Division II: 1, First Holyoke; 2, Holworthy; 3, Thayer; 4, Hampden; 5, Perkins; 6, Weld; 7, Matthews.

Division III: 1, Hollis-Stoughton; 2, College House; 3, Foxcroft-Divinity; 4, Grays; 5, Brentford; 6, Second Holyoke.

Twenty-three crews in all making a total of 184 men, rowed during a period of three weeks. Of this number fully one-half were green material and many had never been in a shell before. No regular training rules were enforced, but some of the crews trained on their own account. With this small amount of practice and the inevitable irregularity of attendance the development of the crews is very creditable, both to the coaches and to the men.
