POOR PRACTICE YESTERDAY

No Score in Scrimmage.--Many Substitutes in Line-Up.

The football scrimmage yesterday afternoon was extremely poor, possibly because a substitute was played in nearly every position on the first eleven. Neither team was able to score in the ten-minute period. Most of the men who played in the Amherst game last Saturday were given very light practice. While the members of the second squad were passing and punting the ball, Burr gave the ends practice in running down under punts. Later Coach Reid gave Burr some individual instruction in kicking goals, a point in which he was rather weak in the last game. The linemen, under the direction of M. Donald '99 and C. Blagden '02, tried breaking through and blocking for some time, while the ends had practice in quick starting and in taking the proper position when waiting for a play to start. Foster, New hall, Starr, and Taylor tried a number of drop-kicks from the 30-yard line with good results. One new man reported: A. V. Kidder '08, centre. Shortly before the scrimmage the University team lined up against some substitutes for signal practice and a short drill on simple plays.

The second team was given the ball near the centre of the field, but after several plays lost it on downs. Grosvenor made two yards through right tackle, after which Newhall punted, the second team downing the ball on their 16 yard line. Greenebaum gained four yards through the line, but lost the ball in the next scrimmage on a fumble. A fumble by the first team followed, on which Nourse downed the ball for the second team. The eleven failed to gain and punted, Newhall downing the ball on his 20-yard line. On a backward pass the ball was fumbled, Newhall regaining it after an 8-yard loss. The second team was penalized 15 yards for holding, after which Gilmore regained the ball for the first eleven on a punt, on the 32-yard line. An exchange of punts followed, Tweed finally getting the ball on the 35-yard line. The first eleven failed to gain because Nourse broke through the line twice and stopped the plays. Newhall punted, and after the second team had been again penalized for holding, Gilder tried to return the punt. The ball was blocked and downed for the first eleven on the 34-yard line. Grosvenor made four yards through right tackle, and then Gray added six more through centre. Two more penalities were inflicted on the second team for holding, after which the first eleven got the ball on downs on the 21-yard line. Grosvenor gained eight yards on an end play, and Gray five yards through centre. After a fumble by the first team time was called. The line-up for the scrimmage follows: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN.
