Communication

Changes in Architectural Department.

[We invite all men in the University to submit communications on subjects of timely interest. The CRIMSON is not, however, responsible for the sentiments expressed in such communications as may be printed.]

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

The Department of Architecture is to put in operation next year a new plan for advanced instruction in architectural design. Five prominent architects have been appointed by the Corporation to co-operate with the present instructors in the department in carrying out this plan. These architects are Mr. R. S. Peabody of Boston, lately President of the American Institute of Architects, of the firm of Peabody & Stearns; Mr. F. M. Day of Philadelphia. Vice-President of the American Institute of Architects; Mr. E. M. Wheelwright, lately City Architect of Boston, of the firm of Wheelwright & Haven; Mr. R. C. Sturgis of Boston, of the firm of Sturgis & Barton; and Mr. C. A. Coolidge of Boston, of the firm of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge. These architects will each in turn give one month of service in the department. During that time each architect will lecture on special problems of architecture and will conduct a problem in design in each of the two advanced classes, criticising over the drawing board the work of each student as it progresses during visits of atleast two afternoons a week, and giving a formal criticism of the results before the class on the completion of the work. This arrangement will affect especially the work of the fourth year and the graduate students in architecture.

During the present year the Life Class was omitted. This class will be re-established next year under the charge of Mr. H. D. Murphy during the second half-year. Special work in figure drawing from the cast during the first half-year will lead up to the work in drawing from life. H. L. WARREN.
