The University baseball team defeated Trinity in the second game of the season Saturday afternoon by the score of 8 to 1.
In batting the University team showed improvement over the game with Vermont, making eleven hits, but most of them were short. The base-running remained poor. The fielding was fair until the seventh inning, when it became careless and erratic. Trinity's one run was directly due to the carelessness of Coburn and Stephenson.
Castle pitched a good game, allowing only two hits during the first six innings. Taylor pitched well in the last inning, striking out all three men. At batting and fielding Kemble showed improvement. He is still somewhat nervous in the field and so cannot be depended upon. Matthews fielded his position well, with the exception of one poor throw to first. In batting his work was not up to his usual form. Leonard, at third base, played a good, confident game. Mahar's outfield work has improved steadily. In hitting his ability has made him a strong candidate. Kernan's field work, was not as good as usual although his one error was excusable. Both he and McCarty have improved in batting.
The scoring began in the second inning, when Stephenson made a scratch hit over shortstop, went to second on Kernan's out, and scored on McCarty's grounder to third. In the fourth inning, Stephenson hit towards second base, went to second on Kernan's short hit, and came home on the third baseman's error. Kernan got to second on his own hit and scored on McCarty's grounder. McCarty and Castle then scored on Kemble's hit. In the sixth inning McCarty reached first, stole second, and was brought home with Kemble by Mahar's three-base hit. In the next inning Matthews scored on Kernan's single to right field. In this inning Madden made the only run for Trinity on a hit, an error by Coburn, and a passed ball by Stephenson.
