The question whether the Boston Elevated Railroad Company shall construct an elevated structure or one or more subways in Cambridge is to be decided by the voters of Cambridge at the city election tomorrow. The new plan for the subways which has been approved by the City Council calls for two two-track subways from Harvard square, one under Massachusetts avenue and Main street to the new Cambridge Bridge, and the other under Cambridge street to the new Charles River Dam. The legislation last year provided for a four-track subway from Harvard square under Massachusetts avenue and Main street to the new Cambridge Bridge, but the Railroad Company declined to build this system because prospective travel was not sufficient to warrant such an expense.

Unless the vote is in favor of subways the Railroad Company will be obliged to carry out the right which it possesses by its present charter to build an elevated structure in Massachusetts avenue, Main, River, Bridge and Cambridge streets and Western avenue.
