The practice of the University football squad yesterday afternoon was not especially interesting as most of the regular first team players were give a rest.
The time was largely devoted to work with small squads. All of the regular coaches were on the field and were assisted by several graduates. The linemen were given short practice in tackling the dummy. Head coach Reid took charge of a squad of fullbacks and later punted for the ends, who worked under the direction of Coaches Bowditch and Kernan. Coach Waters gave considerable time to the guards and tackles and M. J. Connor, who played tackle in 1895 and 1896, coached a squad of quarterbacks.
The scrimmage lasted only ten minutes and neither team scored, the ball being near the centre of the field most of the time. There were several fumbles, and the second team once held for downs. Toward the middle of the period Hanley punted to the first team's 23-yard line. Leonard caught the ball and ran to the 48-yard line, where Cunniff finally stopped him after a splendid diving tackle. Near the end of the scrimmage Coach Kernan took Giuld's place to punt for the second eleven. Montgomery, however, broke through the line and blocked the kick. C. M. Cavenee 2L. is a promising new candidate for tackle. He has never played football until this year, and although his work yesterday showed lack of experience, he is fast, and has the weight requisite for a strong tackle.
