UNEVENTFUL SCRIMMAGE

No Score in a 12-Minute Period.--Line-Men Coached Individually.

In football practice yesterday afternoon particular attention was given to the line candidates, in order to overcome if possible the deficiency in this respect which has existed since the beginning of the season. For nearly an hour before the scrimmage Coach Bowditch gave the ends practice in running down under punts against opposing ends, and tried to correct a tendency on the part of many of the ends to use their hands in blocking. After the scrimmage the line men were given a long hard drill in blocking through under the direction of Coaches Waters and Lewis. In the scrimmage, which lasted only 12 minutes, there was no scoring, although the first team made several long gains. The backs used poor judgment at times, but on the whole did very good work, and the punting was very good. The second eleven made frequent gains through the line, chiefly through left guard and left tackle. This was partly due to the fact that White played far to the right, leaving too much ground for Brill and McFadon to cover. Hanley's work at fullback was very unsatisfactory. He is not playing nearly as well as at this time last year, but as yet no one has been found to take his place. Leonard is developing into a very reliable punter and Foster has shown marked improvement in this direction. Starr is very weak on catching punts in the backfield, although he runs the team with life and is useful in the interference.

Cunniff kicked off to Starr on the 20-yard line, who ran back 10 yards. Failing to gain Foster punted outside to Lincoln, on the 50-yard line. Nesmith and Somes netted eight yards in three plays and the second was given five yards for Brills offside play. Somes, in three plays, made eleven yards. The first team braced, however, and held the second for downs. Foster tried a run around left end but was thrown for a loss by Montgomery. Wendell gained only two yards on the next play and Foster punted outside, Brill falling on the ball on the 44-yard line. The first team kept possession of the ball until the end of the scrimmage, although they made no score. Just as time was called Wendell, with Foster and Starr as interference, made a 60 yard run around the second's right end, but was tackled by Leonard 30 yards from a touchdown.
