The University football team will play Brown this afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Stadium. This game promises to be fairly close and hard as Brown has an unusually fast offense, and has scored 202 points in the six games played this season. Colby and Maine were defeated by 70 to 0 and 34 to 0 respectively, but in the game with Pennsylvania last Saturday Brown did not make so good a showing. Pennsylvania won by the narrow margin of 8 to 6, but this score cannot be taken as a test of the relative strength of the two teams. None of the scoring was done by good football and the Brown team's chief merit was its ability to take advantage of Pennsylvania's errors and fumbles.
The University team showed last Saturday in the game with West Point that its main faults were its lack of variety of plays and the slowness of the line in starting. During the week several new plays have been tried and the squad has had practice in starting. There are a few changes in the line-up. Burr will be tried at guard and his punting should be of valuable assistance to the team. Knowlton, who in the short time he has been out, has done very promising work, will be in at right tackle. At quarterback Newhall will replace Starr, whose game in the backfield last Saturday was very unsatisfactory. Captain Hurley's leg is improving steadily, but he is not yet able to play.
The probable lineup: There was no regular scrimmage yesterday afternoon, although the first eleven and a team of substitutes lined up for practice in kickoffs. The entire squad was given work in falling on the ball, and in starting on short sprints. In punting practice the ends went down under the kicks, but the tackling was very poor. The line men were given short runs after catching the ball. Brill and Carr were given a rest and Hanley was not out on account of a slight illness. The line-up for the kickoff practice:
