In spite of the warm weather the practice of the University team yesterday was exceptionally fast and hard. Three touchdowns were scored by the first eleven in a 16-minute period. This was especially good work, as the line of the second team played low and offered a strong defense. The preliminary practice consisted of starting, passing and falling on the ball. Knowlton was again in the line-up and showed improvement. Burr also held better in the line. The best offensive and defensive playing was done by Nesmith, who secured several excellent dive tackles. Long end runs by both him and Leonard were noticeable features of the practice.
Carr recived the kickoff and ran to the 25-yard line. Wendell fumbled and Witherby secured the ball for the second team. Another fumble gave the first eleven the ball and Wendell made eight yards around right end. As Nichols gained only a yard and Carr was thrown back for a loss of two yards by C. Blagden, Brill punted to Gilder, who was tackled by MacDonald in the centre of the field. Fish went through Kersburg for three yards but Gilder lost seven yards on an attempted quarterback run. Fish punted and Nichols ran back 13 yards to the 43-yard line. The first eleven then carried the ball down the field, the only long gain being Wendell's 13-yard end run. MacDonald secured the ball after a fumble on the 14-yard line, and went over for the first touchdown. White kicked the goal.
MacDonald ran the next kickoff from the 20 to the 40-yard line and from there Nesmith took the ball the length of the field, but was called back for stepping outside on the second team's 50-yard line. Leonard was given the ball and went around left end for a touchdown. Leonard received the kickoff and ran back to the 20-yard line. Burr punted to Lockwood, who went out of bounds on the first eleven's 50-yard line.
The second team was thrown back for several losses and was held for downs on its 45-yard line. Knowlton made 10 yards, assisted by Brill and Nesmith, and after short gains went over for the third touchdown. A long punting practice followed in which Burr did some good work.
