The first secret football practice of the year was held yesterday afternoon, and everyone was excluded from the Stadium until 5 o'clock, after which the scrimmage was open. Today the same plan will be followed, everyone being admitted for the scrimmage.
The preliminary practice began with work in falling on the ball for the entire squad. Then the line men were coached in blocking and breaking through and there was punting practice for the backs and ends. The ends went down under the kicks but did not tackle the runners. Burr, Knowlton, Foster and Brill did the kicking, and of these Burr did by far the best work, getting off some remarkably long punts.
The offensive play of the first eleven was fast and effective, and two touchdowns were scored in a 12 1-2 minute period. The defense, however, was not as good as on Tuesday, owing partly to the fact that Burr and Whitman, who have had practically no experience this year, were in the line-up. There was still too much fumbling, but it was partly due to poor passing. Starr's work at catching punts and kickoffs in the backfield showed great improvement, and he used remarkably good judgment in running the ball back. McFadon played a steady game at guard and made a good interference for the runner.
MacDonald received the first kickoff on the 35-yard line and ran back three yards. The first eleven then carried the ball down the field in 11 straight rushes for a touchdown. Carr went over for the touchdown and White kickd the goal.
Coach Reid then kicked off to Starr, who ran back from the 10 to the 45-yard line, helped on by McFadon's excellent interference. Wendell fumbled on the first play, but MacDonald recovered the ball. Foster gained 15 yards on a fake kick, and Carr went through the line for a yard more. Brill then punted to Morris, who fumbled, but Leary fell on the ball on the second eleven's 32-yard line. Two rushes failed to advance the ball and Heilborn was thrown back for a loss of 12 yards on an attempted run around right end.
As a result the first eleven received the ball on downs on the 24-yard line. Three plays carried the ball to the 14-yard line and Foster went outside left tackle for the second touchdown. White kicked the goal.
Starr again received the kickoff, and ran the ball back 40 yards to the centre of the field. Nichols fumbled, but the first team recovered the ball. Burr then punted to Leary who received the ball on the 35-yard line and ran back 13 yards. Lockwood gained seven yards on an end run, and Paul added three more through the line. Heilborn failed to gain, owing to a poor pass and Kempner made a 13-yard quarterback run around Whitman's end, finally being tackled by Nesmith. Paul made a short gain, but Lockwood fumbled and Nesmith secured the ball on the first team's 42-yard line. Brill stepped back to punt, but White's pass went over his head. As Knowlton failed to gain Brill punted to Lockwood, who run from the 30 to the 38-yard line when time was called.
