SUBSTITUTES IN LINE-UP

Practice Ragged.--First Team Unable to Gain at Critical Times.

In the scrimmage yesterday afternoon, which lasted 16 minutes, the second eleven made one touchdown, the first eleven failing to score. This showing, however, cannot be taken as a test of the relative strength of the regular first and second teams, as the first eleven was unusually weakened by the loss of several regular players. The work of both teams was ragged and offside play was altogether too frequent. Both sides punted continually and, in spite of the strong wind blowing across the field, Leonard made some excellent kicks. The discouraging feature of the practice was the inability of the first team to gain at critical times. The second eleven held for downs on the 8 1-2 yard line and several times forced the other team to punt.

The touchdown was scored when Leonard attempted to return a punt from the 15-yard line. The kick was low and hit the line. Fish, recovering the ball, went over for the touchdown. Morris punted out but failed to kick the goal. Giddings made a fine tackle and Hurd did some good work in running back the second kickoff. The longest runs were made by Leonard, who circled right end for over 30 yards, until tackled by Jones, and by Barney and Witherbee, who secured the ball on a fumble and netted 40 yards on a double pass. The line-up: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Pruyn, Grant, l.e.  r.e., Giddings, Leary Pell, l.t.  r.t., C.
