Yale Letter

Under the direction of Head Coach Owsley and Captain Shevlin about seventy men have been out for football practice for the last three weeks. As but five men of last year's team, Captain Shevlin, Hoyt, Flinn, Morse, Tripp, are still in college, the team must be built up from practically new material. The material so far available is not so heavy as last year, but there is a greater uniformity of playing ability among the men, which should make the contests for positions very close. Hutchinson, Erwin, Stuart, and Werneker have been showing up well in the last week's practice. In the line,--where the biggest loss was felt, many men have been tried, among whom are Congdon, Stuart and Beebe as ends; Peyton, Bigelow, Turner and Forbes as tackles. For guards, Erwin, Smith, Andrews and Holloway have been tried; at centre Flanders, Gillis and Andrews were used during the past week. In the backfield, besides the regular men, Lemon, Stevenson, Veeder and Roome have made substantial gains in the practice games.

Candidates for the track team have been called out and practice is held regularly every afternoon. The annual fall track meet has been announced for October 14. A new ruling has been made this year that no handicap will be given contestants as in former years, and, further, that no man who has won his Y on the track may compete.

Candidates for the class crews, reported last week, and have been rowing daily at the harbor in preparation for the fall regatta, which is to be held on Lake Whitney, October 21.

The elections of officers of the 1909 football team resulted in the election of M. C. Hannah, President and Manager; S. Whitney, Vice President, and S. D. Stockton, Secretary and Treasurer.

The total registration of the incoming class is 719; Academic, 351, and Sheffield Department, 368.
