Yale Letter.

A great effort is to be made this year to bring baseball up to the standard of other athletics at Yale. The most important changes are the appointments of Walter Camp as advisory coach and of W. L. Lush as head coach. Mr. Camp will hold the same position in regard to baseball that he has held for several years toward football. Mr. Lush has played on the Eastern League, the Cleveland American League and the Boston National League teams. As to the team itself the outlook is hardly encouraging. A number of the old players have left college and among the upper classes there is little new material. Of last year's players there are now in college: Captain Bowman, first base; O'Brien, shortstop; Huiskamp, third base; Jackson and Bell, pitchers; Smith, right field; Parnes and Cote, left field.

The university hockey team met in Pittsburg for its Christmas trip. Of the four games played, Yale won one from an all-interscholastic team and lost three by close scores to a Toronto team.

One of the longest trips ever taken by a Yale athletic team was taken by the basketball team during the holidays. Of the fifteen games played nine were won by Yale. Games were played in Wilmington, Charleston; Atlanta, Mobile, New Orleans, Pensacola, Nashville, Lebanon, Cincinnati, Detroit, Syracuse, Hamilton and Schnectady. Nine men were taken on the trip.

The musical clubs were gone 18 days on their annual Christmas trip, and gave concerts in Auburn, Cleveland, Youngstown, Chicago, Des Moines, Omaha, Denver, Colorado Springs, Kansas City, Nashville, Louisville and Pittsburg.

Practice in the spring athletics has been started. The freshman crew candidates were called out on Saturday, ninety-eight men reporting, and practice for the relay team was also begun. A general call for track men will be made at the end of this month.
