Harvard won the intercollegiate tennis championship yesterday by defeating Columbia 5 matches to 1 on Jarvis Field. The University team won all four of the singles matches and one out of two of the doubles.

The best-played match in the singles was between Clothier (H.) and Leroy (C.). Clothier was not pressed at any time and won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Lyon (H.) defeated Mahon (C.) in a close match, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. Both men played fast tennis, Lyon winning by greater steadiness and brilliant cross-court volleying. Prentice (H.) defeated Bulkley (C.), 6-0, 6-4, playing faster and steadler tennis than his opponent. Bishop (H.) defeated McLaughlin (C.), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Both men played carefully, Bishop winning out by superior net play.

In the doubles, Prentice and Clothier (H.) defeated Leroy and Bulkley (C.), 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. The Harvard pair were effective at the net and should have won in straight sets but for Leroy's brilliant cross-court strokes. Mahan and McLaughlin (C.) defeated Larned and Smither (H.), 6-3, 7-5, by better team work and more accurate handling of lobs.
