Professor A. S. Hill '53, of the English department, has tendered his resignation, to take effect September 1, 1904. He will continue, however, to give English 5, a graduate course in composition.
After leaving College, Professor Hill graduated from the Law School in 1855, and the same year was admitted to the New York bar. From 1856 to 1870 he was engaged in journalism. In 1872 he was chosen assistant professor of rhetoric, and in 1876 was appointed Boylston professor of rhetoric and oratory, which position he has held ever since. At Commencement last June the University conferred upon him the honorary degree of LL.D.
Professor Hill is the author of "Our English," "The Principles of Rhetoric," "The Foundations of Rhetoric,"' and "The Beginnings of Rhetoric and Composition."
This year he has conducted English 5b, English 8a, and English 29, and has given several lectures in English 28.
