We invite all men in the University to submit communications on subjects of timely interest The CRIMSON is not, however, responsible for the sentiments expressed in such communications as may be printed.
To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
Will you allow me to call attention to the new opportunity which is to be offered in the year 1904-05 for the practical study of scientific philanthropy? Harvard University and Simmons College for Women, are to unite in maintaining a "Training School for Social Workers" in Boston under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey R. Brackett '83. Dr. Brackett is President of the National Conference of Charities and Corrections, a lecturer in Johns Hopkins University, and a recognized leader in the science of charity. The school is designed for advanced students, both men and women, who, having studied the principles of relief, wish to prepare themselves for professional or expert service by the closer study of specific problems and institutions. Boston and its neighborhood provide many resources for such clinical research. Women will register in Simmons College men in Harvard University, and admission to the school will be limited to those who are approved by the director. The new undertaking will thus represent and develop the new profession of social service, which is now claiming the attention of many students. Dr. Brackett may be addressed at City Hall, Baltimore, Md., until May 1, and after May 1 at 8 Park street, Boston.
In addition to the Boston school, Dr. Brackett will offer during the second half of 1904-05, in Harvard University, a starred half-course, given twice a week, on "Practical methods of public aid charity and correction." This course will take up the questions of charity where they are left at the end of the first half-year in Philosophy 5, and will offer to students large opportunity for practical observation, and a convenient introduction to the more elaborate and professional work of the Boston school. Very truly yours, FRANCIS G. PEABODY.
