Since the early assignment of Yard rooms to members of 1905 on February 25, it has been thought desirable by the undergraduates as a whole to call to the attention of the Corporation some permanent plan, by which each succeeding class may have the privilege of rooming in a body in the Yard. Accordingly, the class presidents have appointed the following committee, consisting of three men from each class: from 1904--R. F. Manning, L. Grilk, A. A. Ballantine; from 1905--P. O. Mills, R. H. Bollard, R. D. Moot: from 1906--J. M. Montgomery, Jr., J. W. Burden, Jr., R. F. Guild; from 1907--F. W. Sargent, Jr., A. S. Cobb, F. H. Davis. The committee met on the evening of March 16, and devised the following plan, which will be submitted to a meeting of all the classes on Tuesday evening, March 22, and if adopted, will be sent to the Corporation with the request that it be made immediately operative.
The plan suggests, owing to the fact that the Yard buildings can accommodate only about 550 men, they be divided between Seniors and Juniors only. In detail, the plan is as follows: that Holworthy be always reserved for Seniors: and, in order that a student may live in the same room two years, that the remaining six dormitories be divided into two groups: Group A--Stoughton, Thayer and Weld; Group B--Hollis, Matthews and Grays. Group A is to be assigned to men graduating in classes of the odd years, beginning with the class of 1905: Group B to classes graduating in even years beginning with 1906 as Juniors. In case the two upper classes do not fill all the rooms, another drawing is to be held, preference being given as follows: in Group A, to men in the lower classes graduating in odd years; in Group B, to men in lower classes graduating in even years. Further, the drawings for Seniors and Juniors are to be held on or before February 25, in order that the men may not be obliged to lease other rooms.
The committee also considered the question of improving the Yard dormitories. The Corporation has already voted the following answer to a petition signed by members of the Junior class, for improvements and alterations in Hollis and Stoughton Halls, and for certain modifications of the rules governing the assignment of rooms:
"1. That the Corporation are at present unable to defray the cost of the proposed improvements and alterations in Hollis and Stoughton Halls.
"2. That the proposed improvements and alterations will be carried out if the money needed is given to the Corporation, and that the assignment of all rooms in Hollis and Stoughton Halls for the year 1904-1905 shall be made with due notice that the assignment is subject to an increase of rent amounting to twenty dollars for each room, and a further charge of twenty dollars for heating each room, in case the proposed improvements should be completed before the opening of the academic year 1904-05; except that persons who exercise the right to re-engage their rooms in Hollis and Stoughton Halls for the year 1904-05 would incur the charge for heating only and not an increase in rent.
"3. That in view of the shortness of the time remaining before the announced assignment of College rooms for the year 1904-05 no change in the method of assigning rooms for next year can be put into effect unless the money to pay for the proposed improvements is provided by April 1.
"4. That the Corporation are disposed to extend the experiment of giving preference to students in the Senior class, or in the two upper classes, in the assignment of rooms in certain dormitories--Hollis Hall to be substituted for Weld Hall in the list of dormitories in which preference is now given--and of allowing students to apply for rooms in groups of four or more persons."
