Yale Letter.

For the past week the candidates for the university crew have been reporting daily at the harbor. Thus far the work has been confined to rowing in pair-oars and in practicing the stroke on the rowing machines, which were recently taken from the gymnasium and set up in the boathouse. Captain Cross, C. E. Adams '04, and Coach Kennedy have been going out in the pair-oars with the men and have also been giving individual coaching. The freshman crew squad, which was recently reduced to forty men has been doing consistent work in the pair-oars at the harbor. The class crews are still practicing in the tanks. The training table for the university crew will start next Monday and that for the freshman crew on March 25.

A. R. Flinn '06, of Pittsburg, has been elected captain of the university hockey team for the ensuing year. He played point on the team during the Christmas trip last year and on this year's team. All the members of the hockey team, except ex-captain Ward, will return to college and be eligibile for next year's team.

Although a reduction was recently made in the university baseball squad, several new candidates have reported, and about forty men are now out. Practice has been held daily in the cage and the men have shown up well in batting and in such fielding practice as it has been possible to hold in the cage. Aside from the regular baseball work, a new system of training the men through calisthenics has been adopted this year. No outside practice has yet been possible. The first game scheduled is with Trinity on March 23, but it is doubtful whether the diamond will be in a condition to permit a game on that date. Several candidates of the freshman baseball squad who have shown promising ability have been transferred to the university squad.

The annual concert of the Glee Club for the benefit of the Yale Boat Club will be given at the Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, on April 22.

The 1905 Record board has been organized with H. G. Dodge as chairman, and A. M. Coit as business manager. The 1905 editorial board will assume control with the April issue of the Record.

By a vote of the faculty the class of 1904 will be the last to have a valedictorian and salutatorian. The reasons given for this change are that under the present elective system considerable risk of injustice is involved, and also that it seems desirable to avoid the element of rivalry and hard feeling which has sometimes marked the struggle for first place.
