RHOADES SCHOLARSHIPS

Qualifying Examinations Will be Held in January.--Information for Candidates.

According to the latest information received by President Eliot, as chairman of the Rhodes Scholarship Committee for Massachusetts, the qualifying examinations for the next appointment will probably be held in January. The scholar to be selected after these examinations will go into residence at Oxford in October, 1905. The object of holding the examinations three months earlier than last year is to allow the elected scholars a better chance to have their preferences considered in the assignment of men to the several colleges. Candidates who competed for the appointment of 1904 will not have to take the qualifying examinations over again if they present certificates of exemption from "responsions" such as were given to all candidates who passed the qualifying examinations in 1904.

A meeting of the committee of selection for Massachusetts will be held on Thursday, when a decision will be reached regarding the admission of candidates from secondary schools, as well as from colleges. Applications for admission to candidacy for the appointment from Massachusetts should be addressed to the chairman of the Rhodes Scholarship Committee, University 5, Cambridge.

Copies of Oxford responsions papers for past years can be obtained from the Oxford University Press, 91 Fifth Avenue, New York. The "Students' Handbook of Oxford," which gives full information about the examinations of the University, subject to changes made since the last edition was issued, can be ordered at the same address. "Oxford as It Is," a small pamphlet prepared by Mr. L. Dyer, of Harvard and Balliol Colleges, for the use of American candidates, giving all essential information in a condensed form, can be ordered from the Macmillan Company, 66 Fifth Avenue, New York. "Oxford and its Colleges," written by Mr. J. Wells, of Wadham College, and "Oxford and Oxford Life," edited by Mr. Wells, may be recommended for those who wish to gain fuller information about the University and its colleges.
