The first debate of the interclass series was won last night by the Sophomores, who supported the negative of the question: "Resolved, That the army canteen should be re-established." The Sophomore team was composed of G. J. Hirsch, M. C. Leckner and S. F. Peavey, who spoke in the order named. The freshman order was D. Rosenblum, P. L. Butler and E. R. Lewis. H. LeB. Sampson L. '04, R. L. Lyman '03 and E. C. Demoss 1L., acted as judges, and W. H. Davis '05 presided. Though there was little choice in the value of the evidence produced by both sides, the Sophomore speakers, partly through greater experience, excelled in the matter of form as well as in the presentation of a more unified case.
The Senior-Junior debate will be held in the New Lecture Hall on Monday evening. The final debate of the series will take place in February.
