OPEN PRACTICE TODAY

At 4 o'clock, Following Secret Work.--40-Minute Scrimmage Yesterday.

There will be open practice of the University football team this afternoon at 4 o'clock, previous to which secret practice will be held.

In secret practice yesterday afternoon, under extremely adverse weather conditions, the team engaged in very little preliminary work, except that of running through signals to perfect plays for the game on Saturday. The scrimmage, however, lasted 40 minutes. Owing more to the weakness of the second eleven than to improvement in the University offense, the first team scored five touchdowns, four of them on long runs. Oveson played at right tackle on the first in the scrimmage and his work on the defense was good. Meier was in the signal practice line-up but did not go into the scrimmage. Blagden, Montgomery and Derby were on the field but did only light work. Shurtleff has an injured knee but will probably be out again tomorrow. Nichols is still crippled so that he is not likely to play in Saturday's game. Starr, who has been playing quarterback on the Freshman team, has again been taken on the University squad.

The first ten minutes of the scrimmage were devoted to practice in kicking, Brill, Kernan and Sperry punting for the University team. Sperry's work in this line was the best, and as a result of it he will probably play left halfback on Saturday. The first two touchdowns were made by Kernan and Hurley on excellent runs from the first eleven's 20- and 40-yard lines respectively. Hurley made the third score on a 60-yard run after the second eleven had rushed the ball to the University's 50-yard line. The second team then kicked off to the 25-yard line and the University eleven rushed to the second's 25-yard line, from which Hurley again went over for a touchdown. Mills scored the last touchdown after the ball had been advanced by short gains from the second team's 35-yard line.
