HARVARD VS. BATES.

Game Today on Soldiers Field at 4 o'clock. Satisfactory Practice Yesterday.

The University football team will play the Bates eleven this afternoon at 4 o'clock on Soldiers Field. Last year Harvard defeated Bates in an easy game by the score of 23 to 0. With five of last year's players on the team again this fall, Bates has made a creditable showing in the four games already played this season, defeating New Hampshire State College 6 to 0, Hebron 20 to 0, tieing Holy Cross 0 to 0, and losing to Phillips Exeter 29 to 0.

The probable line-up of the two teams follows: HARVARD.  BATES. Jones, l.e.  r.e., Messenger, Libby Meier, l.t.  r.t., Schumacker Parker, l.g.  r.g., Turner White, c.  c., Thurston McFadon, r.g.  l.g., Johnson Carr, r.t.  l.t., Reed Montgomery, r.e.  l.e., Mahoney Noyes, q.b.  q.b., Wight Nichols, l.h.b.  r.h.b., Kendall Reynolds, r.h.b.  l.h.b., Lord Mills, f.b.  f.b., Conner

The University practice yesterday afternoon, though not as fast and aggressive as that on Monday, was on the whole satisfactory. The scrimage, which was the longest yet held, amounted to a twenty-one minute half. The only touchdown made was by the first team just at the close of the practice. Noyes, on a fake kick, received the ball on the second's 45-yard line and ran around left end with an excellent interference to the 5-yard line. Hanley made the touchdown on a line plunge.

During the scrimmage the first eleven was penalized 15 yards for offside play, and the second 5 yards. The first eleven held for downs twice and the second once.

There was much more fumbling by both teams than usual, but this may be accounted for by the wet condition of the ground.

The University team made use of a tackle back play once during the scrimmage, on which Carr secured a gain of 10 yards. The majority of the plays, however, were ordinary line plunges and frequent runs around the ends. The quarterback run, in the several times it was tried, proved an excellent ground-gainer. The work of Reynolds in the backfield of the first team was noticeably good.

The line-up: FIRST TEAM.  SECOND TEAM. Jones, l.e.  r.e., Nye, Leary, Pope Meier, l.t.  r.t., Jones Parker, Pell, l.g.  r.g., Russell White, Barney, c.  c., White McFadon, r.g.  l.g., Pell, Brown Carr, r.t.  l.t., Gilmore, Paul Montgomery, Shurtleff, r.e.  l.e., Filley, Whitman, Williams Noyes, q.b.  q.b., Mahoney Nichols, Sperry, l.h.b.  r.h.b., Nesmith, Foster Reynolds, r.h.b.  l.h.b., Means Mills, Hanley, f.b.  f.b., Dearborn
