The University basketball team will leave Boston at 1 o'clock this afternoon for its game with Columbia in New York this evening. The game will be the second played by Harvard in the intercollegiate schedule. In the first game, played last Friday, the team lost to the University of Pennsylvania.
A marked improvement has been apparent in the work of the team the past week under the coaching of Mr. Barnes. Especial attention has been given to strengthening the defense and the guards and center now follow their men closely on the defense, and are quick in breaking away when the ball changes hands.
Columbia won second place in the league last year and although only two of last year's players are in the present line-up, yet the team is a very strong one. Last year Columbia defeated Harvard in a close game by the score of 14 to 12.
The Harvard line-up will be the same as in the Pennsylvania game last week. K. Smith will be the only substitute taken on the trip.
