Professor J. K. Paine's opera, "Azara" was given its first public performance in Chickering Hall last evening, before a large and interested audience. The opera treats a powerful theme, and at times rises to the highest pitch of dramatic power and lyrical expression. The concerted parts of the opera were particularly effective and stirring, and of great richness of tone and harmony. The accompaniment to the opera was performed on the piano, which fact, in itself somewhat of a detriment, gave indication of the possibilities which orchestral accompaniment would afford.
