HARVARD, 13; HOLY CROSS, 1.

Work of University Nine Shows Improvement over Princeton Game.

The University nine defeated Holy Cross at baseball yesterday in a one-sided game by the score of 13 to 1. The University team showed improvement in all departments over the form displayed in the Princeton game. Although a tendency to hit at bad balls was noticeable, the batting was more reliable than usual, eleven hits being made against Spring, who was, however, of no more than average ability. The base-running, although somewhat stupid, was much more intelligent than in last Saturday's game, while the nervousness which was so characteristic of the fielding then, seemed entirely absent. Three errors were made, but the general play was characterized by speed and precision. Coburn pitched creditably and showed marked improvement both in speed and control. He proved most effective at critical moments, and retained good speed until the very close of the game.

Holy Cross proved unexpectedly weak in the field, and was unable to hit Coburn with any effect. Spring was unsteady at critical moments and was hit freely in the third, fourth, and seventh innings.

Harvard scored first in the third inning, when four runs were made on a succession of hits and bases on balls. In the fourth, Clarkson's home run brought in three more runs, while a costly error by Baldwin in letting a single pass him resulted in two more in the sixth. In the seventh, three hits, an error by Devlin, and a base on balls allowed two men to cross the plate, and in the next inning Stillman closed the scoring with a home run to deep left field.

Holy Cross scored its only run in the fourth inning when Devlin reached first on a fielder's choice, was advanced to second on an error by Randall, to third on a poor throw by Coolidge, and then scored on Flynn's single.
