The University crews raced yesterday over the three and three-eighths miles course down-stream from the Boylston street bridge to the Union Boat Club. The first crew gave the second a start of ten seconds and won by about half a length, having, from the start, gained steadily. Up to the last half mile of the race neither eight rowed a stroke exceeding 30 to the minute, and most of the time both rowed steadily at 28. When within a quarter of a mile of the finish, both crews spurted, and the first, by rowing a slightly higher stroke gained another quarter of a length. The water was somewhat choppy, but did not materially affect the time, which was not especially encouraging.
On the way back to the boathouse two brushes of about a mile each took place between the two University crews and the first Freshman boat. In the first brush none of the crews gained much, but the second was won by the first University eight. In both brushes the Freshmen kept up well.
The orders of the University crews have been unchanged since last Thursday. They are as follows:
First crew--Stroke, Dillingham; 7, Lawson; 6, McGrew; 5, Duffy; 4, F. W. C. Foster; 3, Hartwell; 2, Filley; bow, Swaim; cox., Litchfield.
Second crew--Stroke, Wolcott; 7, Haycock; 6, R. Foster; 5, Ayer; 4, Derby; 3, Ober; 2, Webster; bow, George; cox., Ivy.
