The first of the interclub class races to decide which crews shall enter the finals for the class championship next Monday will be rowed this afternoon up-stream over the regular mile and seven-eighths course starting at the Union Boat Club and finishing at the Longwood Bridge.
At 4 o'clock the first and second Weld and the Newell Freshmen will be started. These three will be the only crews in this race as the second Newell Freshmen have disbanded. At 4.30 o'clock the Sophomore crews of each club will race. The positions of the crews in both races will be determined by lot before the race this afternoon. In order that there may be no delays all crews must be on the starting line at the times designated.
F. L. Higginson, Jr., '00, will act as referee. The judges at the finish will be R. A. Derby '05 and A. Hemenway, Jr., '05, and H. Bullard '02 will be one of the timekeepers. The other timekeeper will be appointed today. The final arrangements for the preliminary races between the Seniors and the Juniors have not yet been completed, but will probably be similar to those of today.
The outcome of the race between the Sophomore crews this afternoon is rather doubtful; a slight advantage probably rests with the Weld crew, which has been together longer than its opponent. The chief fault to be found with the Weld crew is that it fails to get a powerful and finished stroke. J. H. Perkins '98 has been coaching them. The Newell Sophomores have been coached by H. Bullard '02. They seem unable to keep up a high stroke, but are rowing well together.
The first Freshman crews of both clubs are well matched and their race this afternoon should be one of the closest of the series. In a recent race over the regular course with the Seniors the Weld Freshmen had no difficulty in winning in record time. On Saturday the Newell Freshmen defeated the three Newell upperclass crews in a short race by a close margin. Both crews are rowing well together. They have been coached by Vail and Wray.
The orders of the crews which will row today are as follows:
Newell Sophomores--Stroke, Webster; 7, Swaim; 6, Tew; 5, Locke; 4, Hall; 3, Leaycraft; 2, James; bow, Stockton; cox., Lewis.
