The University basketball team will play the Yale team in the Gymnasium this evening at 8 o'clock. This is the last home game of the season, and, with the exception of the second match with Yale to be played at New Haven next Friday, the last game the team will play.
The record of the team thus far has been disappointing. The season began with a victory over Princeton in Cambridge, but on the New York trip which followed immediately afterward, the team was defeated by Cornell and the Washington Continentals of Schenectady; it is questionable if the standard of play in the first Princeton game has been reached at any time since. Individually the men have at times shown themselves capable of fast playing, but the greater part of their work has been mediocre. Their ability to throw baskets seems to have deteriorated as the season has gone on. The passing and team play have been fairly good, but at no time has the fast and aggressive play been developed which is so necessary to a winning team. To the lack of this and the failure of the men to throw baskets accurately is largely due the poor result of the season's work up to this time. In addition to this, the team has been weak in throwing goals from fouls. This weakness was responsible for the loss of the Cambridge game with Columbia and has kept down the score in other games. Of the individual players, Captain Hanavan at right guard probably plays the strongest game. He is at all times very aggressive and assists materially in the advancement of the ball. His efforts in this respect, however, have sometimes made him leave his opponent uncovered and this permitted the other team to score goals that should have been prevented. Bigelow, who is now at left guard, also plays a strong game. Grant, who has been put in at left forward only within the past week, throws, well, but is backward in getting into the play. K. Smith, at right forward, passes fairly well, but is weak in his throwing. Since the return of the team from the New York trio. Randall has been at centre. He has so far failed to equal his play of last year be is usually first in the jump-off at centre, but plays only a fair passing and throwing game.
The Yale team has been defeated but once this season--by Princeton last week, when Princeton won by a score of 26 to 22. Inasmuch as Princeton has been twice defeated by the University team, the last time within a week of the victory over Yale, it seems, in spite of the better general record of Yale, that the team should have a good chance for a victory tonight.
Tickets for the game have been pm on sale at Leavitt's and Brine's, at per- cents each. They will also be on sale at the door before the game. In addition to the usual seats around the floor a stand will be erected at the south end of the Gymnasium.
Following is the probable line-up:
