UNIVERSITY CATALOGUE OUT.

Shows Total Enrolment of 4,328, Gain of 67--The Representation by States.

The University catalogue, which is issued today, shows a total enrolment this year of 4,328, a gain over last year of 14 in the department of Arts and Sciences, and of 53 in the professional schools. In the total number of persons in any way connected with the University there is a gain of 466. The decrease in the Medical School enrolment is due to the rule, which came into force in 1901, requiring that all candidates for admission be holders of the A.B. degree. This rule will probably continue to decrease the enrolment for another year; but after that the number should remain fairly steady, and eventually should increase. The great increase of 322 in the Summer School enrolment may be ascribed to the fact that many teachers who were present at the meeting of the National Educational Association, held in Boston last July, remained at the University during the summer.

Two important additions to the catalogue this year are the new department of forestry, the courses in which will begin in the second half-year; and the account of the Stillman Infirmary and its different funds.

In the rules relating to admission, there is one change and an addition. The change is a slight one in an entrance requirement in elementary Latin, which will be optional in 1905 and compulsory in 1906. The addition is in regard to the admission of students from other colleges: the old rule still holds, allowing students who have completed two years at another college to enter the class for which the committee on admission thinks them fit; but in addition, a student who has satisfactorily completed one year in another college may be admitted as a special student for one year, and at the end of that time be assigned to the class for which the committee thinks him fitted.

The enrolment by states of students in all departments of the University, except the Summer School, is as follows: Massachusetts, 2,259; New York, 479; Pennsylvania, 174; Ohio, 155; Maine, 122; Illinois, 119; Rhode Island, 89; New Hampshire, 73; New Jersey, 70; Connecticut, 64; Iowa, 61; California, 53; Indiana, 52; Missouri, 49; District of Columbia, 41; Kentucky, 34; Wisconsin, 30; Michigan, 29; Maryland, 26; Vermont, 26; Colorado, 22; Minnesota, 19; South Carolina, 14; Kansas, 13; Utah, 12; Virginia, 12; Washington, 12; Tennessee, 11; Alabama, 9; West Virginia, 9; Nebraska, 9; Oregon, 8; Arkansas, 7; Montana, 7; Texas, 7; North Carolina, 6; North Dakota, 6; Louisiana, 6; Georgia, 5; Delaware, 4; Idaho, 3; Oklohoma, 3; Florida, 2; South Dakota, 2; Wyoming, 2; Arizona, 1.
