SECRET PRACTICE BEGINS.

Many Substitutes Play.--Two Touchdowns by University Eleven.

The first secret practice of the University eleven yesterday was marked by no features of especial interest. The work was of average quality only, though it showed possibly a slight improvement upon that of Tuesday,--the men going into the scrimmage with somewhat more fight. Although the line played fairly hard, it was still very slow. A large number of substitutes were put in on both teams, and this fact, though partially accounted for by the inability of several of the first team men to play, shows also that the choice of men to fill several positions on the eleven is still indefinite. Owing to slight injuries, Nesmith, LeMoyne, Shea, Robinson, and A. Marshall did not go into the scrimmage, and Schoellkopf played but a few minutes.

Preliminary practice began with the usual kicking and catching of punts, after which the coaches gave particular attention to coaching the men in tackling, and falling on the ball. Three teams went through a short signal practice. The following coaches assisted Coach Cranston: N. S. Cabot '98, G. W. Bouve '98, R. Lawrence '01, R. W. P. Brown '98, C. H. Barnard 2L., B. G. Waters '94, J. Dunlop '96, W. H. Lewis '95L., M. Donald '99, E. Motley '02.

Nichols punted for the University eleven and Goodhue for the second. Little resort, however, was had to punting, and both of the two touchdowns scored during the 15-minute line-up were effected by straight football. Hurley made the first, after an end run of 13 yards by Nichols and a series of line plunges of from four to seven yards had carried the ball from the University's 47-yard line nearly to the second's goal line. By a similar series of rushes from the center of the field, the University eleven scored its second touchdown, Mills taking the ball over the line. Marshall kicked both goals.

The line-up: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Clothier, Montgomery, l.e.  r.e., Shurtleff, Blagden Parkinson, Meier, l.t.  r.t., Lehmann McFaddon, l.g.  r.g., Upham, Carr Wilder, Sugden, c.  c., Pel.
