Eight members of the Faculty are on leave of absence from the University this year: Professors Toy, Smith, Bartlett, Strobel, Wendell, Taussig, and Hart, and Mr. J. L. Coolidge. Professor Palmer has leave of absence for the first half, and Professor Royce will be absent for the second half of the academic year.
Professor Toy of the Divinity School has been traveling in Palestine and Egypt and is now at Rome. He is engaged in writing "An Introduction to the Study of Religions," which he expects to have published shortly after his return to this country.
Professor Smith is spending the winter in Paris.
Professor Bartlett is also in Paris for the present. He has passed the greater part of the winter traveling in France and Germany.
Professor Strobel, who has not been well for nearly a year, has been recuperating at Bethel, Maine, since last June. His health has improved somewhat and he left last week for Washington, D. C., where he will deliver a course of twelve lectures on international law at the Columbian University. Professor Strobel has an offer to go to Bankok as the adviser of the King of Siam on international law, and may not return to the University next year.
Professor Wendell has finished half his course of lectures on English literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, and is traveling in the south of Europe and in Egypt. He will return to England in the spring to finish his lectures.
Professor Taussig is on his second year's leave of absence, having been unable owing to continued ill-health to assume his duties at the beginning of the College year. He is still resting in the South Tyrol, Austria. Although his condition has not improved greatly, it is hoped that he will have recovered sufficiently to resume his work at the University next year.
Professor Hart is traveling in the Southern States, where he intends to spend several months; in June he will deliver a course of historical lectures at the University of California.
Mr. Coolidge has obtained leave of absence from the University for two years. He has for some time been engaged in advanced mathematical studies at the universities of Paris. He will spend the summer in Germany and will go to Italy next winter.
Professor Palmer is staying with his brother, Rev. Dr. Palmer of Andover, Massachusetts, and will probably return to Cambridge at the beginning of the second term.
Professor Royce, who has leave of absence for the second half-year, will leave next Tuesday for southern California.
