The Boston Athletic Association will hold its fourteenth annual athletic meeting Mechanics Hall on February 14. Prominent men from all parts of the country will compete. The programme will include a number of quarter mile relay races, the more important being Princeton versus Cornell and Harvard versus the University of Pennsylvania. It is now almost definitely decided that Harvard will also race Yale in a half mile relay. In the early part of April the regular class championship games will be held and a week later the annual University games will take place. Before the dual contest with Yale at New Haven, there will be a two-mile race for a cup offered by Mr. A. W. Blake-more '97, open only to men who have never been on the University team. The season closes with the intercollegiate meet at Mott Hoven.
The Mott Haven Cup will go to Yale permanently this spring unless Harvard or Pennsylvania wins the meet. For this reason, a victory in track athletics never meant more to the University than it does this year, and the season cannot be brought to a successful close unless more men come out for the team. Of the colleges who enter the intercollegiate meet this year, Yale is undoubtedly the strongest, and, as in the spring of 1901. Harvard's only hope lies in second and third string men.
The class of 1906 has as yet not shown any exceptional material, but this may possibly be due to a lack of opportunity to show it. The following men of last year's team have returned to College and are eligible this year:
100 yards dash--J. E. Haigh '03, R. W. Robbins 1L., W. A. Schick '05.
220 yards dash--J. E. Haigh '03, E. M. Ayer '03, M. T. Lightner '03, E. C. Rust '04, W. A. Schick '05, R. W. Robbins 1L.
440 yards run--M. T. Lightner '03, E. C. Rust '04, H. M. Channing 2L., G. E. Behr 2G.
880 yards run--H. M. Channing 2L., G. E. Behr 2G.
1 mile run--J. W. Foster '03, F. S. Buffum '04, R. M. Walsh 2L.
2 mile run--J. H. Hall '03, C. M. Frothingham '03, D. P. Penhallow '03, J. H. Stone '04.
120 yards hurdles--F. W. Bird '04, J. H. Converse 2M.
220 yards hurdles--F. W. Bird '04, F. E. Scheuber '05.
Running high jump--R. P. Kernan '03, F. M. Murphy '03, A. Derby '03, J. M. Rothwell '05.
Hammer throw--W. G. Piper '03, R. Oveson '05, C. A. Barnard 3L.
Shot put--C. H. Robinson '04, J. Burke '04, F. G. Schoenfuss '04, J. Q. Tingley '05.
Running broad jump--F. M. Murphy '03, D. R. Ayers '05.
Pole vault--W. E. Storey '04, A. Robson '04, R. G. Hall '04, H. P. Pratt '04, F. B. Scheuber '05.
Of these men only one or two are of exceptional ability. Although there are a number of other good men in College, they will have to do better than they have ever done before in order to equal the performances of some of the Yale team. Thus Harvard must rely solely on second, third and fourth places, and to win must have a large squad of men who will be satisfied with nothing short of success.
