Tennis During the Summer.

Throughout the past summer Harvard has been unusually well represented in the tennis tournaments, which owing to the large number of entries and strong combinations of players have been more important than ever before. The fact that Englishmen entered into the open major tournaments has also increased interest.

The international tournament held at Bay Ridge, N. J., from August 6 to 9 between the English and American associations for the Davis Challenge Cup was by far the most important event of the season. The American team won this for the second time by defeating the English in three out of four matches of singles. The English, however won the doubles, thereby giving America three matches to their two.

In these matches M. D. Whitman '99 defeated Dr. J. Pim 6-1, 6-1, 1-6, 6-0; and defeated R. F. Doherty 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. In doubles R. F. and H. L. Doherty defeated D. F. Davis '00 and H. Ward '00, 3-6, 10-8, 6-3, 6-4.

The national tournament, held at Newport, R. I., during the week commencing August 19, began with the unusually large number of 83 entries which included all the prominent American players, as well as the Dohertys and Dr. Pim. During the second day E. W. Leonard '03 was defeated by L. H. Waidner in five hard sets, 5-7, 3-6, 6-2, 8-6, 6-4. On the third day, the Dohertys for the second time defeated Ward and Davis in the final match for the doubles, and thereby gained the national championship title for the first time that it has ever been given to foreign players. As in the previous match in the international tournament Ward and Davis lost by erratic playing. In the fourth and fifth rounds of the singles, Whitman defeated B. C. Wright '03 by fast tennis 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and L. E. Ware '99 defeated Pim 7-5, 7-5, 6-3 in an exciting match, and was easily defeated by H. L. Doherty, 9-7, 6-1, 6-2, Whitman defeated R. P. Huntington 8-10, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, in the semi-final round and H. L. Doherty defaulted to his brother, thereby leaving the final match between Whitman and R. F. Doherty, who easily won, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

The Longwood tournament which was next in importance to that at Newport, began July 28 and was won by W. J. Clothier, '04. Among the entries were many Harvard graduates and undergraduates. After the second day when R. F. Doherty defeated B. C. Wright 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, the Dohertys and M. D. Whitman who had entered the singles withdrew. Ware, I. C. Wright, Ward and Clothier were left in the semi-finals after the first few rounds which were uninteresting and their matches resulted as follows: Ward defeated Ware 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1; Clothier defeated I. C. Wright 6-4, 6-3, 6-1. In the finals Clothier defeated Ward 2-6, 9-7, 6-3, 6-3, and won the challenge match with Larned.

Wrenn '96 defeated Wright and Clothier 6-2, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. R. F. and H. L. Doherty defeated the Wrenns in the finals 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.

On July 21 the summer tennis season opened with the Nahant tournament, which was won by M. D. Whitman. Among the Harvard men entered were B. C. Wright, Clothier, Ward, Ware, Davis, and W. P. Blagden '04. In the semi-finals Whitman defeated Clothier 8-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Wright defeated Ware 7-5, 6-4, 6-3. Whitman won the finals by defeating Wright in a brilliant, steady match of five sets, 3-6, 8-6, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.
