The prospects for a good team this year are bright. Twenty members of last year's team have returned to College and there are many promising candidates in the Freshman class. To fill the vacancies caused by graduation, however, it will be necessary to develop a good deal of new material. It seens at present that the team will be strongest in the sprints, hurdles, and half mile.
The following members of last year's team are still in college:
Hurdles--J. G. Willis '02, J. H. Converse '02, R. Abercrombie '03; mile run--H. W. Foote 3Div., H. S. Knowles '02; two mile run--E. W. Mills '02, O. W. Richardson 3L.; broad jump--J. H. Shirk '02, J. Foster Jr., '02, A. W. Ristine '02, A. M. Butler '02; 100 and 220 yard dashes--A. M. Butler '02, J.E. Haigh '03, M. T. Lightner '03; half mile run--G. E. Behr, Jr., 1G., E. B. Boynton '02; quarter mile run--E. C. Rust '04, T. L. Manson '04; shot put--C. H. Robinson '04; high jump--R. P. Kernan '03, N. F. Glidden '03. New men will have to be relied upon entirely for the hammer throw and pole vault.
The most promising of the new candidates are W. T. Piper '03, in the hammer throw; F. B. Scheuber '05, E. M. Sawyer '04, R. Goodhue '04, and R. G. Hall '04 in the pole vault; F. M. Murphy '03 in the high jump; S. Waller '03 in the mile; F. W. Bird '04, O. J. Ives '03, and F. B. Scheuber '05 in the hurdles; W. A. Schick '05 in the dashes; and H. M. Ayres '05 in the broad jump.
The Yale team this year will probably be strong in the dashes, long distance runs, high jump and shot put. Its greatest weakness seems to be in the broad jump and hammer throw. The team will suffer the loss of W. M. Fincke '01, R. Sheldon '02S., G. S. Stillman '01, H. P. Olcott '01, C. Dupee '01, and J. H. Hurd '01. An unusually large number of last year's team, however, are still in college, among whom are the following men:
Hurdles--J. B. Thomas '03, E. Clapp '04; 100 yards dash--M.N. Hargrave '02S., R. M. Ingham '03S., W. Arnstein '02S., S. G. Camp 1L., S. D. Ward '03; 220 yards dash--N. H. Hargrave '02S., R. M. Ingham '03S., S. D. Ward '03, W. A. Lilley '03S.; quarter-mile run--J. R. Hunter '02, W. A. Lilley '03S., D. Boardman '02; half-mile run--J. R. Hunter '02, D. W. Franchot '03S., E. R. Clark '03; mile run--W. B. Weston '03, W. D. Waldron '03, S. B. Chittenden '02, H. G. Stevens '02S.; two-mile run--M. J. Donahue '04. B. G. Teel '02, W. B. Weston '03, W. D. Waldron '03, R. W. Bumstead '03; high jump--J. S. Spraker 2L., D. W. Franchot '03S., C. L. Duval '03 G. F. Vietor '04; broad jump--J. S. Spraker 2L., W. S. Fulton '03, V. E. Davoud '03S.; pole vault--H. H. Peas '02S., D. P. Thomson '03S.; shot put--F. G. Beck 2 M. S., G. A. Goss '03; hammer throw--F. G. Beck 2 M. S.
Of the new candidates for the team, F. R. Moulton '03 L.S., and C. S. Jacobus '05, have already shown signs of ability. Moulton won the 100, 220 and 440 yard dashes in the fall athletic games, and Jacobus won the fall cross-country run.
