The football squad engaged in the first actual play of the season yesterday afternoon.

In the morning the work was light, consisting of passing and falling on the ball, and kicking practice for the backs. Two teams, A and B, were formed, and the men were put through signal practice in order to get accustomed to their positions.

The practice in the afternoon was heavier. The linemen were coached by Lewis and Waters for a short time while the other candidates went through the usual practice. The two teams formed in the morning then went on the University field, where they lined up for about fifteen minutes of actual play. After considerable fumbling team B got the ball, and Devens tried a kick, but the pass was poor, and he missed. The next kick was blocked, but the following attempt was successful. Team A then advanced the ball for some distance through Eaton, who did not play strongly. Team B secured the ball on a fumble, and Knowles went around left end for fifteen yards. Bucking by Devens and another long run by Knowles brought the ball within one yard of the goal line. On the second attempt Piper went over for a touchdown.

Derby, Morse, Hollingsworth and Howe of last year's squad returned yesterday.

The football training table will be started at Young's this morning with the following fourteen men: Campbell, Devens, Graydon, Knowles, Barnard, Daly, Riggs, Greene, J. T. Jones, Lawrence, Piper, Littig, Burgess, Sugden.
